History lesson

Yesterday I covered an always popular fund-raising tea for our local historical society. Entertainment was a one-woman play, and an actress from Massachusetts kept the crowd spellbound with her portrayal of Elizabeth Blackwell.

"Now class, who can tell me who Elizabeth Blackwell was?"

"Yes, Joan, I see you back there waving your hand in the air. Why don't you tell us who she was and why a play has been written about her life story?"

To be continued ...

Um...I'm raising my hand...I vaguely remember that name from when Twelve was in the fifth grade and they did a Woman In History week. I'm remembering something about the first woman doctor, and an abolitionist. Am I close...do I get a gold star?

yes you do - even though your sister was supposed to do the research

I know who Elizabeth Blackwell was but unless and even if she was hassled by the men in her chosen profession, I can't imagine what would be interesting enough to put in a play. I actually remember the name from one of the Dr. Quinn episodes (now is that pathetic?)where she commented on the hassle they both had to go through.

Yes Lynn, you get a HUGE gold star.

Moose - It was an interesting play about a woman ahead of her time (how does that sound?)
who had to have an eye removed and that prevented her from becoming a surgeon, which was her dream.

Yes I knew who she was but that's because of all the young girls who would come to the library begging for an interesting woman to write about during Women's History Month.
