Red barn, red pickup

Our Father's Day tradition continued this year with a slight twist.

We attended the annual vintage vehicle show at the Shelton History Center.
The twist was that our daughter, Allegra, was there in 1913 costume, volunteering as a docent for the first time.
She gave three tours of the Marks-Brownson House on the history center grounds. And she enjoyed it!

There's a tiny spot of red in this photo!

This photo is from the 10th annual Poetry Cafe I attended recently at Ansonia (Ct.) Middle School. Here Bob DeSautels, a retired reading teacher who is now working as a substitute, recites "To Morrow," a folk song made popular by the Kingston Trio in 1960.

Reading teacher Yvette Bailey did a great job transforming her classroom into a "beatnik-era" cafe.

It was a fun event, for the seventh and eighth graders who participated (it was optional) and the audience members (like me).

As you can see I get to cover fun programs for my job!

I haven't played Ruby Tuesday in a long time. I'm happy to return.

Ruby Tuesday ~ art

As I wondered what I could use for a Ruby Tuesday post it dawned on me that the walls of the Valley Arts Council's Gallery@37 are red. 

Perfecto!

Ralph and I are members and supporters of the arts council and have had some of our photos displayed there.

This painting, "Looking Glass,' was created by Valley Arts Council Vice President Steve DiRienzo.

  

Arts council member Len Grayeck painted "Secrets" for the show.

Ruby Tuesday ~ Season of giving

I recently wrote a story about our local Salvation Army's Christmas distribution of food and gifts to the needy.

These figurines garbed in old-fashioned Salvation Army uniforms that were on a table in the sanctuary caught my eye while I was there.
I imagine they're singing Christmas carols and ringing the bell to get folks to put a donation in the red Christmas kettle.

I usually order a glass of wine with dinner, but since it was our 26th anniversary celebration Saturday night I ordered a Cosmo. It's the second one I've ever had.
It was quite good.

Ruby Tuesday ~ school days

 

I drove our son back to school yesterday afternoon. He is a computer science major at the University of Hartford (Ct.).

I snapped this through the passenger window while I was waiting at the light. Not too exciting, but at least it's red! And that means I can use it for a Ruby Tuesday post.

Today I post a photo of some real rubies, or gems as it were! These are some of the members of the next generation of our extended family.
I'm happy two of them were wearing red, which gave me an excuse to use this for Ruby Tuesday!
Oh, and the flagstones are red, so it's all good.

Ruby Tuesday

My surgeon brought me this balloon just hours after surgery two weeks ago. It was a fun surprise as I was lying there waiting for the effects of anesthesia to subside.

I thought it was sweet of her! It made me smile, and it made my overnight stay at the hospital more pleasant.

Ralph (Airhead 55) suggested I use a photo of it for Ruby Tuesday, since I haven't participated in RT for quite a while. Just can't seem to get organized!

I'm attempting to return to the blogosphere...and since I hadn't done a Ruby Tuesday post since Dec. 28 I thought it was about time I did!

I miss doing photo memes, but life does get in the way of blogging, as they say.

Ruby Tuesday

I took a fun foliage trip to the Northwest hills of Connecticut two weeks ago with blogger extraordinaire Linda of Are We There Yet? and we stopped at this covered bridge.

Linda is an expert on covered bridges! And she was startled to find this one in need of a good power washing. She said other ones she had seen in New England were not filled with dirt and cob webs like this one is, which made us both embarrassed for our home state of Connecticut.

It was pretty gross when we ventured inside and walked through it. You can't tell from the photo below, but take our word for it!

Ruby Tuesday

Ah, such beautiful two-tone October foliage on this tree I spotted last week in the Ansonia (Ct.) Historic District.

All the wires? Not so much. But necessary in our world. When this blue house, known as the Blakeslee House, was built in 1712, no one ever dreamed of electricity, or blogs. ;-)

Perish the thought.

Well there is not much Ruby-ness in this photo, but there are some red leaves and a red door peeking out from the lower right-hand corner. I usually have a bit more red in my Ruby Tuesday posts.

Ruby Tuesday

The leaves are starting to change color here in southern Connecticut. I'm kicking myself that I didn't take this photo looking toward our neighbor's yard yesterday, when the cloudless sky was the most beautiful shade of blue. Today the clouds are upon us.

Not much red, 'tis true, but I had to share this capture from Saturday afternoon.

Ruby Tuesday ~

Two of my favorite rubies!

Here they are after the Center for Disability Rights' annual Wheel-a-Thon yesterday at the beach in West Haven, Ct.

I missed seeing the obstacle course competition, but Ralph said all went well and lots of people took part.

Allegra and I got there just in time for lunch and cake ~~ we were at church when the event started Sunday morning.

All in all, it looked like it was a major success. Kudos to Ralph's friends and colleagues who organized the fund-raiser!

Ruby Tuesday

I took these photos today. They are the first red leaves I've spotted. Seems early, but a farmer told me the crops were ready two to three weeks earlier than normal this summer. Maybe the trees are following suit.

I am looking forward to the fall foliage!

Ruby Tuesday

Tuesday is back, and so am I. I can't believe that five weeks have flown by since last I participated in Ruby Tuesday.

My excuse is the July heat and humidity made me sluggish..lazy..too hot to post.

haha. I hope August brings us some more bearable weather.

So, I went out this afternoon and found these pretty red doors on an Episcopal church about two miles from our house.

Christ Church was built in the late 1890s. It is made of Ansonia granite and New Jersey gray stone in the English gothic style, according to its Web site. Construction was completed in 1896, in time for Christmas services to be held there.

When I got home I took this shot of a flower from a plant a friend gave me. Unfortunately I don't know what kind of flower it is. I haven't planted the plant; it's still in the pot.

This mural was hanging above the guest book at our nephew's wedding. Notice two people leaning over the table signing the book. Too bad I didn't get a view of the entire mural. I may have had a bit of wine before taking this photo. haha

The wall really was red, just right for Ruby Tuesday.

Ruby Tuesday

Ralph and I went to Boston this past weekend. Yippee!

It was a treat to see something different for a bit ~ a change of scenery is always good for the soul.

We attended our nephew's wedding and had a great time seeing family and taking in the sights.

I snapped this shot of the '57 Chevy BelAir convertible that cruised around the block several times while we were sitting outside the bar below:

What a perfect Ruby Tuesday sign! Ralph also posted this photo today for RT.

The apartments upstairs must be inhabited by twenty-somethings. Just a guess.

We joined family members outside for drinks. It was a beautiful evening, plus I'm not young enough to go in a place like that!! It was fun to watch the passing parade. A group of sailors in dress whites walked by and we all applauded and said thank you to them.

I took this photo of the entrance to Quincy Market on our way back to the hotel.

Below we find a carousel in Christopher Columbus Park, across from where we had Father's Day brunch. I spied the red and had to shoot a photo for Ruby Tuesday.

Yet another shot of the interesting garden lovingly cared for by a friend. I've posted several photos from our visit two weeks ago, most recently on Sunday. This photo is straight out of the camera.

If I had cropped it I would have gotten rid of the dandelion for her.

* We are having problems with our Internet connection...it has been slower than slow and after having to struggle with it all day for work yesterday I had to walk away.

Our daughter called the provider last night and they may send someone out today if it's not better. I hope so..it's so aggravating.
