Sepia scenes ~ wheelin'

After I took this photo as we were leaving the Vintage Vehicles Antique and Classic Car Show at the Shelton (Ct.) Historical Society I thought it might just work in sepia.
The annual event is held on Father's Day, and dads get admitted for just $1. Proceeds benefit the educational programs sponsored by the historical society.

Here's Ralph, my classic car buff, rolling back to our mini-van on his own set of wheels. It was a perfect weather day for an outdoor event. It couldn't have been nicer out.

Ralph wrote about the car show here, for
Ruby Tuesday.

I haven't taken part in
Sepia Scenes since November, and I thought this week I'd make a comeback. It's good to get back into a photo meme.

Sepia scenes

On Sunday we attended a Thanksgiving open house at the David Humphreys House in Ansonia, Ct. Here are several junior docents who made a lot of the food (pumpkin soup, squash pie, turkey and all the fixings) we sampled. They did a great job.
They even churned butter in glass jars. Now that is a lot of work!

Our daughter has been working there as a docent teaching fifth graders from area schools to learn about "A Day in 1762," the year that Humphreys was 10 years old.
Unfortunately tomorrow is the last day of the program until spring. Part of the day is spent outside touring the historic district, and so the classes are put on hold for the winter.

You can read about the open house here, and here, and at Ralph's blog here and here. I hope you can stop by! Safe to say we both got a lot of posts out of the fun event.

Sepia Scenes ~ experimenting

I thought I'd try something different with this night photo of the gazebo on the Derby, Ct. Green. It's fun to experiment!

As you can see I was out ve-r-r-r-y late the other night. Not a soul in sight. (I wasn't alone, my companions are just not in the frame.)

But more on that later. See lots more sepia-fied photos at Mary T's Sepia Scenes blog.

Sepia scenes

I snapped this yesterday while on assignment photographing a despicable act of vandalism to a memorial. The monument was installed in the 1990s to honor a local man killed in combat during World War II. The memorial area is in a park next to a reservoir.

The photo reminds me of an old-fashioned swimmin' hole on a hot summer afternoon.

And the original:

Sepia scenes

I took this photo through the windshield June 20 as we were leaving Boston after our nephew's wedding the day before.
Ralph took a rather circuitous route - something for which he is known around here - so I could get pix of the Leonard P. Zakim-Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge. We'll forgive him this time.

And, just for fun on a hot summer day, here is the original below. Which do you prefer?

Sepia Scenes ~ serene

I snapped this last week on a hot and hazy afternoon. I liked the color version, not so sure if the sepia/antiquing enhances it. The fun is in the experimenting, right?

Sepia Scenes ~ Boston encore

Yet another photo from Boston. This is a promenade that was built above a new tunnel which was dubbed the Big Dig when it was under construction.
Ralph and I were wandering back to our hotel on a hazy, hot Sunday morning when we spotted these children making good use of the fountains!
It looked so refreshing I wanted to jump in with them.

This is the second exterior shot I've sepia-fied that looks like science fiction to me.
What do you think of the pink-ified version below? I think I prefer it.

Sepia scenes ~ Boston building

I liked how this stately old edifice - Board of Trade Building - appears like it must have looked in a former time. There were no air conditioners in the windows and there were no power lines in the way. It seems as if the photo could have been snapped a hundred years ago.
At least I think so.
Ralph and I were in Boston for our nephew's wedding on Father's Day weekend and I took this then.

Sepia Scenes ~ feline fun

This stray cat relaxing outside my hairdresser Maureen's shop reminded me of the Top Cat cartoon I watched as a kid. Top Cat lived in a garbage can, but he had all the comforts of home. I can remember the TV antenna on top of the can.
I thought I'd share this video, to bring back wonderful memories for those of a certain age. ;-)
Or those who have seen the show on Cartoon Network or YouTube!
Maureen said she feeds about a dozen strays every morning and evening. She even named some of them. They're lucky to have found her!

Sepia scenes ~ It's Libby!

Our neighbor Libby visited me Friday as I was snapping a photo. She likes to stop by and say hi. She's a friendly feline.
Below you can see Libby in living color!

Sepia scenes ~ steeple

This is one of many century-old churches in a former mill town in southern Connecticut.

This church is beautiful inside, as are all of them built by the immigrants who lived here and toiled in the factories of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

I took this picture from the next street over. Interesting criss-cross of wires, eh? I thought so.

Sepia scenes - a friend's garden

Took a walk today with a friend and visited her garden after we walked. I snapped lots of pix, and decided this one looked good in sepia.

Sepia scenes ~ bear with me

I took this picture in West Hartford, Ct. and was thinking of using it for Thursday's Yard Art meme. But it came out well in sepia, so here it is.

The bear was on the lawn in front of an art gallery where our blog friend Linda had a photograph on exhibit in April. Ralph and I went to the reception and you can read about our afternoon here.

This was the scene in front of me moments ago as I was writing this post. Somebody wants his supper. He is making little squeaky noises at me.

Sepia scenes ~ Colonial cemetery

History comes "alive" here.

Monday I visited what is said to be the oldest public cemetery in the United States. It's in Derby, Ct., less than two miles from our house.
How do you like the skull on the top of this sunken headstone? More than one person in the family had a stone like this. Eeek. Many of these ancient headstones were half-sunk into the ground.

As you can see, Mr. Wooster was the first settler here wa-a-a-ay back in 1651. This monument was installed at a much later date.

I thought this impressive 19th-century gravestone looked good in sepia, but I prefer the original below. I think it's because it was such a picture-perfect blue sky when I snapped it. Notice both husband and wife died on Christmas Day. He died in 1841 and she in 1869.

Sepia scenes - blowin' in the wind

Just dandy.

This is our front yard. It was just mowed the other day, but they came ba-a-a-ack.

Sepia scenes

[please click on photo to enlarge]

Regular readers will know where I spotted his great old photograph. It was at my hairdresser's shop, which I have featured in numerous posts over the past 10 days. ;-)
She has lots of vintage stuff around and it's a most interesting place to visit and take pictures.

Maureen said this is a photo of her aunt, now 97, back in the day. She said her aunt didn't drive, she was just posing.
And that's her aunt's father, Maureen's grandfather, in the back, keeping a close eye on his daughter!

Sepia scenes

For yet another post I am using photos I took when I visited my hairdresser Saturday. See here, here, and here for past posts! They are all scintillating, trust me. ;-)

Maureen has an interesting shop. There is plenty of fun stuff to look at and enjoy.

Cool old wall clock that I thought would look good in sepia. Notice James Dean on the wall in the background.

I think this is hydrangea that has seen better days. It was almost a light sepia in its natural state.

I hope my mom doesn't mind that I used this photo of her browsing around eclectic ville. She liked the antique dolls as much as I did. We both got our hair cut Saturday.

Sepia scenes ~ Springtime

Here are some primroses I planted several years ago. I love perennials. No muss no fuss!
Below is what they really look like ~ I took this photo in the bright sun at noontime today.

Happy Spring to all!

Sepia scenes

I was trying to be artsy with this shot of several of my favorite bunnies just in time for Easter.
I'm not happy with how it came out.
I like the second photo better. It's almost true to life but still has a sepia tone.
