Pink is for Pumpkins

On Monday Allegra and I stopped over at a friend's house, and were greeted by these "gals" next to the front door.

Christine's creative teen-aged daughter painted and decorated the pumpkins.

I thought they were adorable and was happy I had my camera with me.

Didn't think to ask if she had painted them pink because October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month or because our community is going pink this coming week.

The Valley Goes Pink Week starts tomorrow...schools, businesses, and organizations have pink-themed activities planned throughout the week to benefit a $1 million fund-raising campaign to go toward construction of a breast wellness center. One town has its own group, and will give part of the proceeds from their events to national breast cancer research organizations.

Pink is the word

On Thursday I attended a rally that kicked off the local hospital's $1 million fund-raising campaign to build a breast wellness center.

The theme of the event was "For Love of Life, For Lives We Love."

So many of us know a friend, a sister, an aunt, or in my case my mother and grandmother, who have had breast cancer.

Since today is Mother's Day, I thought it was fitting to link the story here.

The committee co-chair, who is a 20-year survivor of the disease, talked about the importance of early detection in saving lives and surviving. Let this post be a reminder to all of us!

Ruby Tuesday

Running late this week, but I wanted to be a part of Ruby Tuesday so this morning I snapped a quick photo of this lovely weeping cherry tree (I think) at the entrance to Osbornedale State Park in Derby, Ct.

The sun wasn't out and the sky was that glare-y shade of white.

Below is a photo of Main Street in downtown Derby. Notice the red mulch and red traffic lights! The sky had some blue in it an hour or so later.

Last week I posted a photo of a single rhododendron blossom. Today I post the entire rhododendron, which is now in full bloom. Woo hoo!

According to Wikipedia the word rhododendron is from the Greek, rhodos, meaning "rose", and dendron, "tree."
