Still searching for the sundae of my dreams

Yumm...a hot fudge sundae, an ice cream cupcake, and Moose tracks

Ice cream 101 continues: Bethany edition

On Saturday I went to the newly-opened Ansonia Farmer's Market and met a young couple selling vegetables grown at Darling Farm at the historic Thomas Darling House in Woodbridge. The two are caretakers there and started a farm this spring.

Since husband Ralph, daughter Allegra and I all like learning local history, we drove there today to take a peek.
This house at 1907 Litchfield Turnpike in Woodbridge is on the National Register of Historic Places.

While we were in the "neighborhood," we continued driving to Bethany and stopped at Billy's Old-Fashioned Ice Cream, 742 Amity Road (Route 63). We had been there before, but it had been quite a few years.

Since it's my ice cream series I threw caution to the wind and ordered the big, fat hot fudge sundae...strawberry ice cream was under all the whipped cream. I haven't had a sundae in a long time. It was quite good!

Next post I do I'll have to go back to having just one unadorned scoop.

Ralph enjoyed a cup of Moose tracks ice cream, and our daughter tried something a bit different, an ice cream cupcake.
It was a chocolate brownie topped with vanilla ice cream and sprinkles. She said it was super-sweet and she couldn't finish it.

But she liked what she did eat!

I was surprised that we were the only customers. The weather wasn't bad, no rain or humidity, and I thought there would be people there enjoying ice cream.  But maybe they had gotten there before us, or arrived later.

Will we return? Probably, but not before trying out ice cream places in the Valley, Milford, and beyond.

(Note: I posted this yesterday on the New Haven Register's View from the Valley blog)

~ Whimsical Windows ~

Do you recognize these famous people from days gone by?

From left we have the great illusionist Harry Houdini, aviatrix Amelia Earhart and Italian tenor Enrico Caruso.

All three are among the many celebrities who graced the stage of the historic Sterling Opera House in Derby, Ct. Their images are now in the windows of the former theater.

Members of the Valley Arts Council created the paintings for a portrait project featuring 12 celebrities, ranging from Bob Hope and Bing Crosby to George Burns and Gracie Allen.

They are a talented bunch! I wish I could paint like they do. All I can offer is a blog to promote their work and the art council's events.

Shadow Shot Sunday ~ Tuesday concert

... at the Gazebo.

Ralph's shadow is on the left and I'm sitting next to him. I'm seated a bit lower than the wheelchair, which makes me look up to him!
Usually Ralph has to look up to me. ;-)

Tina's Wordless Wednesday ~ Moooo

(My husband Ralph participates in this wordless meme and I thought I'd join in the fun this week. Our daughter Allegra and I visited a farm yesterday to get ice cream.)

Eating more ice cream, tra la, tra la

I did it again. I consumed more frozen deliciousness on a hot summer day. And it was at yet another historic site.

Allegra joined me in the fun.
This is "swamp" ice cream ~ cookies and cream with caramel swirls and M&Ms.

So in an effort to pump up my page views, I'm promoting it here ~ because I can.

Stay tuned for future installments of Ice Cream 101.

Ice cream, summer, and me

I've been stuffing myself with ice cream this past week. I've gotten three scintillating blog posts out of the activity so far. Anything for a story, or a blog post.

In an attempt to bring page views to my blog for the New Haven Register, I bring you part 3.

I think I'm going to putting on weight if I don't watch out.
Fingers crossed my walks around the neighborhood will help in that regard.

Happy Friday to all!

No one's going to squash my gardening dreams

First pick of what I hope will be a good crop. We've never grown squash before.

Shadow Shot Sunday

Ooooh, aaaah ...

Urban fireworks in Derby, Ct.

Ralph watching urban fireworks.

I spied Ralph's shadow in front of the Valley Arts Council's Gallery@37 before the fireworks started.

As you can see I had trouble with lighting.

Fuzzy photos ~ but I saw some shadows and snapped same.

Happy Fourth of July!

Urban fireworks ~ street scene, Derby, Ct.

We went to see the fireworks last night ~ it's fun, but they always look the same.

So, why do we fight the crowds and traffic and go watch them each year?

To celebrate our nation's independence!  Happy birthday to the good ol' USA!
